Godzilla (1954)

First of all Godzilla had some great dialogue. Here's a mother comforting her child as Godzilla attacks the city, and a man with an eyepatch talking about how he killed his fish.

And of course its special effects were great.

What I found really interesting was how clear they made it that Godzilla was a manifestation of their post-Hiroshima trauma.

  • Godzilla is the ultimate destroyer. He's immune to atomic weapons.
  • He was awoken by underwater H-bomb testing. He emits radiation due to said testing.
  • When a scientist invents a "oxygen destroyer" that can turn any matter into liquid oxygen, he decides that after using it to defeat Godzilla he must kill himself because it's too great a weapon and should never fall into the hands of politicians.
